A few years back, a close friend of mine was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and that was the first time I had heard about it. I visited her a lot trying to help her in any way I could as it was clear to me she was suffering from a lot of pain.
Like myself, she was a naturopath and did not believe in putting chemicals or psychotropic drugs in her body, especially for a relatively new condition where the medical industry truly doesn’t know much about it and where the side effects of such drugs are just as big a concern. So we went on a journey to find natural pain relief for fibromyalgia symptoms.
Symptoms of Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia is an illness that doesn’t necessarily have an explanation, and unfortunately affects up to 4% of our population. It is generally is characterized by overall physical body pain that is felt deep in the bones, joints, tissues and nerves. It comes with a myriad of symptoms including and not limited to:
Chronic exhaustion and fatigue
Chronic soft tissue pain making physical contact painful
Nerve pain, an electric feeling shooting throughout the body, with no particular source
Tension headaches or migraines
Irritable Bowel Syndrome or digestive issues
While there are a lot of theories out there and the disease is finally starting to be recognized as a real medical issue, it has not been 100% determined what truly causes it which makes curing it difficult. Symptoms are often triggered by and begin after some sort of physical or mental trauma, or stress, but some people build up symptoms over time. Women have been found to be more likely to develop these symptoms.
Diagnosis and Misdiagnosis
There is no specific test or scan that is used to accurately diagnose fibromyalgia. It is diagnosed by symptoms and levels of pain indicated by the patient. If a doctor cannot find the answer to that pain through other tests, a diagnosis of fibromyalgia will be made.
Some medical communities and individual success stories have been able to link the symptoms to other underlying autoimmune disease that, when addressed, can lead to a cure or relief from symptoms. Illnesses including Lyme disease, hypothyroidism, some forms of cancer, and other auto-immune disorders come with similar symptoms and are often missed with a diagnosis of fibromyalgia.
I was incorrectly diagnosed with fibromyalgia due to my related symptoms and family history, but a surgical procedure discovered I actually have endometriosis which can cause the same symptoms. Since endometriosis can usually only be diagnosed through surgery it’s very possible many women diagnosed with fibromyalgia are suffering from something completely different.
As yet, there is no cure for fibromyalgia, although there is evidence people are able to rid themselves of the symptoms all the time. My own mother was diagnosed with it several years ago and went through a few months of pain before it just went away.
Part of the problem is not being able to determine the actual cause of fibromyalgia and whether the symptoms being felt are in-fact from fibromyalgia, and not some other undiscovered disordered or autoimmune disease. However, there is a solution that many are using to hugely eliminate symptoms by addressing their serotonin and amino acid levels.
Many people are finding relief from fibromyalgia and auto-immune symptoms by taking a simple supplement to boost their serotonin levels.
Serotonin and Fibromyalgia
Serotonin is naturally produced in your body, and has numerous functions mainly to do with your central nervous systems and how your nerves communicate throughout your body. It is found mostly in your digestive tract, and is a huge part of digestive health and having regular bowel movements. It is also known to play a large part in stabilizing mood and combating depression. Because it is part of what helps your nerves communicate, it makes sense that serotonin is closely tied in to the pain caused by fibromyalgia.
Although not connected scientifically as a cause, many people who suffer from fibromyalgia are found to have low serotonin levels. It is not definite that lack of serotonin is the cause, or if the auto-immune disease is causing the lack of serotonin. But many who suffer have found that balancing serotonin levels, among other related amino acids and biochemicals, greatly improves the symptoms related to fibromyalgia, as well as improving overall sleep and mood.
How to Increase Serotonin Naturally
Big Pharma’s answer to increasing serotonin generally lies in pharmaceutical drugs and chemicals that are not always effective and come with a long list of negative side effects. I recommend staying away from those and trying a natural approach.
There are a lot of recommended ways to naturally boost serotonin including reducing sugar intake, healthy eating, exercise, getting out in the sun, and ensuring you have a balance of minerals and supplements if you aren’t getting them in your food. Unfortunately, those with heavy symptoms from fibromyalgia or other auto-immune diseases, will only find minor relief in the small boosts of serotonin that can be gotten from these simple actions. Additionally, when you are in so much pain you can’t move or eat, it’s really hard to focus on exercise and food as healing options.
Many people who suffer from fibromyalgia or similar auto-immune symptoms are finding relief through a supplement for 5-HTP, which offers an immediate and drastic solution for serotonin production. This is my number one recommendation for addressing nerve pain, exhaustion and all the symptoms that come with fibromyalgia, because I have experienced the miracle and seen it work for more than just myself.
What is 5-HTP?
5-HTP, also known as 5-Hydroxytryptophan, is an amino acid that is a byproduct of tryptophan, and part of the melatonin and serotonin production process. The chemicals produced in your body go through various changes as their function changes in each part of your body.
The supplement form of 5-HTP is an extract from the African plant Griffonia Simplicifolia, and is successfully helping hundreds improve their serotonin production and reduce their fibromyalgia symptoms.
Bonus Side Effects
Appetite Control and Weight Loss: Because serotonin is a part of your entire central nervous system, and heavily operates in your digestive tract, it is said to be helpful with appetite control and weight loss.
Mood Lifting and Stress Relief: Serotonin increase is a way to naturally defeat stress and depression. It’s an automatic mood-lifter. HTP-5 is also known to assist as a natural anti-depressant for some.
Better Sleep: Serotonin is a precursor to melatonin production. Melatonin is the amino acid your body produces that helps it to relax, and creates that light drowsy feeling that leads to deep sleep. Therefore, increase in serotonin leads to better sleep. I find it even more effective as a sleep aid when combined with melatonin.
I have read that some experience nausea and vomiting as a side effect of taking HTP-5. Since it directly affects your digestive system, that does make sense. If you are already taking medications, I would not recommend adding HTP-5 without consulting your doctor.
I have personally found HTP-5 to be extremely safe and effective, both personally and with others. As always, if you have any questions you should consult your doctor.
Where to Get HTP-5
There’s no point spending a bunch of money on supplements. I get mine from Amazon so I can see the reviews and compare prices. Below are my recommendations for the best-selling and reviews brands of HTP-5, as well as some products that have been helpful in overall pain relief of nerve pain symptoms.
