An autoimmune disease or disorder is when a part of the body basically gets confused and attacks itself, causing that part of the body to become weak or malfunctions. There are at least eighty types of officially recognized autoimmune diseases or disorders, with others being added on a near constant basis.
The type of autoimmune disease diagnosed is governed by the particular part of the body being affected. For example, Hashimoto’s is an autoimmune disease that affects the thyroid specifically. Similar diseases can also affect the brain, or numerous other glands, nerve and tissue regions.
While some prescriptions will help replace a function that may be lacking, there are generally no medical “cures” for most autoimmune diseases, and doctor recommendations will usually revolve around symptom management. However, it has been proven by those who work and study in the area of nutrition that food allergies tie in heavily with resolving autoimmune disease.
Allergies and Autoimmune Disease
Allergies are developed by a particular unrecognized component going into the bloodstream. Your body doesn’t recognize the component and creates antibodies to attack it. When you again come across that thing, either by eating, breathing, or touching, your body will warn you and start its attack process.
A large majority of allergies are caused by gut leak, with a food particle escaping through the stomach wall and into the blood stream. Evidence of this lies in the fact that the foods most commonly eaten in a society have the highest rate of allergies connected to them.
For example, a popular allergen in China is soy, yet they are the biggest source of soy bean plants in the world. In America, peanuts are a big allergy problem. And what’s more American than peanuts? Allergies for these popular items and others continue to grow, due to digestion issues and leaky gut.
Similar to allergies, autoimmune disorders cause the body to attack itself. It weakens the body and immune system, and causes malfunction in the affected area. Resolving digestion issues and avoiding allergens has proven to be immensely helpful in reinforcing the immune system, so that proper nutrients can be administered and absorbed, helping to build strength and potentially curing autoimmune disease.
AIP – The Autoimmune Protocol Diet
The Autoimmune Protocol is a diet, generally prescribed to heal the immune system, and help repair the gut mucosa. It is focused on any autoimmune diseases that result in inflammation.
Unfortunately, this diet has some heavy restrictions that include mostly paleo eating, going several steps further by requiring a gluten-free, sugar-free, dairy-free, and nut-free diet, among other restrictions, and recommendations.
While it may seem that this would eliminate a lot of food options and make life very boring, that isn’t necessarily true. There are a lot of exciting things you can eat once you learn how to navigate the alternatives. However, it can be very confusing at first, and generally requires the patient following the diet to make all of their own foods.
I’ve found a cookbook that is getting amazing reviews on Amazon, and is helping people to heal or manage their autoimmune disease simply and naturally with food, by teaching the basics of how to navigate the autoimmune paleo diet, and providing amazing and delicious alternative recipes.
Understanding the Paleo Diet
The word paleo essentially means “before this time,” generally referring to prehistoric times. The basic concept of this diet is to go back to what is natural for the human body.
Unfortunately, in today’s world, many of the foods we eat now have been chemical or genetically changed by man-made processes over the years, or they are simply not the most basic and natural form of a particular food.
This change in our natural food or eating process, is thought to be the cause of increased health problems, and especially the growing rate of those affected by autoimmune disease.
Those on a paleo diet will only consume vegetables, grass-fed and pasture-free meat and eggs, wild-caught seafood, healthy fats (building good cholesterol, not bad), fermented foods, fruit, nuts, seeds, and spices.
The things a paleo would avoid, or at least avoid excessive use of, might be grains, dairy, soy, sugar, and processed seed and vegetable oils, as these can cause inflammation as well as digestive problems, and are said to interrupt the body’s natural process for metabolizing.
Some trying to be on a strict paleo diet will avoid processed food altogether, while most are okay with non-GMO and chemical-free processing, with natural preservatives, as it is still the basic, unchanged ingredient that is significant to your body’s ability to digest and fully use the nutrients of the food.
There are hundreds and thousands of people now benefiting from a paleo lifestyle,with improved general body function and better energy levels. However, there are some who must avoid additional allergens to help them heal specifically from autoimmune disease.

This particular paleo cookbook is one of the highest reviewed diet cookbooks on Amazon, and it gets specific recognition, because it specifically addresses the healing of autoimmune disorders through food.
Unfortunately, this is not available digitally, and only in hardcover. But I feel that is appropriate for this particular book in that it really deserves to be a part of your permanent cookbook library, especially if you are suffering from any autoimmune disease.
It is very possible the paleo diet could be the answer to getting you back to your healthy self, naturally, as it addresses anything from chronic pain and depression, to digestive, hormonal or metabolism issues.

What People Don’t Love About It:
Some of the criticisms to know are that this is a very basic cookbook and the meal plan does include repeated meals, although you can interchange them and enjoy what you like. I personally use more than just one cookbook to complete a meal plan, as should any decent cook.
The real point of this cookbook, however, is to teach someone how to maneuver AIP and paleo diet restrictions simply and with great variety. The book teaches how to adapt to AIP, so you can then integrate it into daily life with other recipes, and substitute accordingly.
